Church History
In his "History of Jessamine County", published in 1898, Bennett H. Young states, "The first church building erected in Nicholasville was by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1799". The first Meetings were held in 1798.
The organization of this first church resulted primarily for the efforts of the Rev. John Metcalf, who spent more than three years preaching in homes and various places throughout the community. Rev. Metcalf and Rev. Nathaniel Harris were largely responsible for constructing the original church building which measured 56’ by 36’, with another room (30’ by 15’), build to accommodate the people of color.
Rev. Metcalf was active in locating and naming the town of Nicholasville. He purchased several lots when the town was surveyed, and build a log house at what is now First and Elm streets. This house has been remodeled and remains attractive today.
Rev. Harris performed the first wedding in Jessamine County on March 14, 1799, as Jesse Hughes and Nancy Nicholson were joined in marriage.
In 1846, the original frame building was torn down and a new brick gothic style building was erected. This building was expanded in 1886 on ground purchased on the east side. The church stood until it was destroyed by fire Sunday morning, December 18, 1921.
The existing building was constructed in the mid 1920’s and was expanded in 1963 with the addition of the educational wing.
The church has been ministered to faithfully during our first two-hundred years by the following pastors: John Metcalf, Thomas Williamson, John Metcalf, J.B.
