What is UMW?

United Methodist Women (UMW) is the Women's Ministries Division for the United Methodist Church.  UMW began with a small group of women meeting in a kitchen for a specific purpose; saving pennies for missions.  In 1869 women missionaries were not recognized as viable by the Methodist Church and were not allowed to be supported financially by the church.  So, this small group of women saved enough money and sent two women as independent missionaries to India.  Once there, they served women and girls who were being discriminated against for medical care.  Even after the women returned, the small group continued to meet and support other mission opportunities and thus UMW was born.

Any woman of any age may be a member of UMW.  It begin with a handful meeting in someone’s kitchen 1800’s and grew to be the largest women's mission organization in the world today!
